Twenty four little doors
The first little door opens up with easeAnd out drifts the scent of the first fir treesThe second little door almost gets stuckOn a marzipan pig to bring good luck
From the third door floats an advent songFrom the fourth Mother Hulda sings alongIn the fifth everybody has work to doThey’re busily polishing pairs of shoes
In the sixth house they’re having a restful dayWaiting for Santa Claus and his sleighIn the seventh in a window way up highThe first little angels are learning to fly
At Eight they’re baking cakes and breadAt Nine they’re getting out the sledgeAt Ten two advent flames burn brightA soft warm glow in the cold dark night
From Eleven come stories of joy and peaceAnd tummies rumble for the Christmas feastAt Twelve the family are having a restMunching on gingerbread with their guests
In the thirteenth window they’re working hardIn the fourteenth they’re writing their Christmas cardsIn the fifteenth everyone’s quite worn outIn the sixteenth the children giggle and shout
By the seventeenth door they can hardly waitAngels’ harp notes resonateFrom Eighteen by Nineteen they knowThere’s only five more sleeps to go
Christmas creeps closer day by dayTwenty Twenty one Santa don’t delayAt Twenty Two magic is in the airAnd the smell of Christmas is everywhere
The Twenty Third is like a dreamCandles nestle in fir tree greenNow Christmas Eve is finally hereAnd Christmas Day is drawing nearAs the children skip and dance aroundThe baby Jesus’ laughter sounds
In its robe of holy candlelightThe Christmas tree stands tall and brightAnd the golden bells sing out their chimeTo tell us it’s present opening time
